The prosecution claims that the witnesses can identify Larkin as the gunman who had fired on Adair's car with a rifle. Belfast councillor Joe Coggle told the court he was in his Berlin Street home when he heard the shooting and ran outside and saw a white car drive past his house.

Mr Coggle said he saw two people crouching down in the back of the car and reported his sighting to the police. Later, under cross- examination, the councillor admitted that after the shooting there were rumours in the Shankill area about those allegedly involved in the incident.

But he said that while he was aware of "the talk in the area", no one had approached him about it. The trial was continuing today, when the first of the three mystery witnesses will give evidence from behind screens.
