Windows vista connect to network but not internet

The internet works fine obviously and the router is working correctly. However, I STILL cannot access the router's setting, which is extremely frustrating and even after a day of internet searching I could find no way of attempting to access the router's setting which actually worked for me. Getting my router to work went something like this: Plug it in correctly to dimension, turn on dimension, no internet connection, wireless light on router not lit. Unplug cable modem, replug in, internet works, but no wireless light.

Reset router using button on back, repeat previous steps, same results. Hook up router to new XPS, open internet explorer. Hallelujah, the address routerlogin. From here I am expecting to be able to edit the setting of the router, and tailor them to the dimension to which it is not currently plugged in , and then plug it back in to the dimension and have it working. Instead, there is no option for this, and it only offers the options to automatically set up the networking information or to quit.

What the heck, let's try auto networking. It can't find an internet connection because the XPS is hooked up to the router only, just to access it's settings Ok, two can play at this game.

Drag entire table with XPS, monitor, speakers, and everything close enough to the cable jack coming out of the wall. Hook up cable modem and wireless router into XPS correctly as shown in the manual. Go through auto networking, picks up a "dynamic IP" internet connection, sets up network.

Wireless light lights up on router. Plug cable modem and router back into normal computer, drag new computer back to it's spot. Turn on normal computer, and internet works, and wireless light remains lit. My XPS is running windows vista. When I turn it on, it picks up the signal with an 'excellent' signal strength, and says that I am connected to an "unidentified" network connection.

I cannot access the internet on my XPS. When I go into the networking windows on my dimension, all it shows is "shareddocs" on this computer. The XPS doesn't show up. I have no idea where to go or what to do, I've never done the whole networking thing before. It shows they are connected on the XPS and not the dimension. Here is my information from the dimension Wireless Network Settings Print this document and store it in a safe place for future reference.

You may need these settings to add additional computers and devices to your network. Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5. So if any of you are even able to solve my seemingly impossible problem, any help would be greatly appreciated. Joined Jan 27, Messages , Hi and welcome. I don't have time to read your entire book, um, I mean post On the wireless computer, did you turn off firewall s? When you set the router up, did you give it a unique name?

Are you broadcasting the SSID? When you look for wireless networks, do you see only yours? Your neighbor's? I have a valid ip configuration from my wireless connection, and Windows has been able to send updates to it, of which they have been downloaded in the past few days. This is a serious problem. I am only thankful that I have other options, but I got this new computer hoping to make my computer life better.

It has only complicated it. I have tried removing the updates, reseting the winsock files, reset the internet explorer to its original settings.

I have done the network diagnosis nothing found. God only knows what functions I have fooled with on this computer. What else to do? I am presently trying to restore to a point a few days prior to all of these downloads from Microsoft.

I even completely removed the anti-virus program running on the computer - to no avail. What I did discover from other posts was restoring the system from an earlier date. I had been trying to remove one update at a time, and this restore helped to get rid of all those updates in one task.

I am back online, but still frustrated with some other issues that go to another microsoft program, but have not had the time to explore that issue yet. I am not sure which update caused this error, but I can definitely say that I will be a little more cautious when accepting microsoft updates Not sure now if this would help, but I ran into a similar issue Try taking the protected mode OFF on your browser first and see if you can connect.

Thanks for your feedback, it helps us improve the site. In reply to Aashish G's post on September 2, The Vista machine connects to the Airport just fine, excellent signal strength. When I am in network settings, it shows a good connection between the computer and the Airport, but it shows the Airport is not connected to the modem.

I know the Airport is working fine because I am sitting here replying to this on one of the two Macs on this network. The internet was working for two days, and then it just stopped. In reply to Jesse and Roxy's post on September 12, One more update. I did everything recommended in this thread up, and realized the problem is not with the network. I connected directly to the modem, restarted the computer and modem, obviously no internet.

So I went into control panel, and the computer says it is connected to the internet. It won't let me diagnose anything if the computer thinks there is a connection. I don't want her to have to take it in somewhere to pay money and find out it is a simple setting that reconfigured when the computer crashed.

I must say, I have a lot of respect for the people that work on and maintain windows machines everyday, these things are a pain to even figure out what is wrong, let alone fix a problem. Networkingisapain in vista. So staicaly placing the ip add and dns servers seemed to do the trick.

Your firmware upgrade might accept these protocols and avoid the issues with vista not accepting the dhcp packets request. You could leave it this way it will work just fine. But once i got online i then i found the firmware upgrade for my Linksys router downloaded it and then installed it and then went back to put all nics wireless and wired back to full DHCP and everything is running fine In reply to Networkingisapain in vista's post on November 6, My vista machine woke up one day from hibernation and decided it could no longer identify my wired network.

I've tried a number of other fixes, including modifying my registry, and they do not work. How can I get in to see the DNS servers I'm hooked up to a Motorola don't know exactly what model, I'm not home at the moment to look cable modem?
