If you don't like the Quick Style set that you've applied, you can easily select another. Word automatically updates the look of your document based on the new Quick Style you've selected. You can change the attributes of an existing style, such as a heading or list style and then save it as part of a custom Quick Style set. In the Modify Style dialog box, make any changes to the style that you want, select the Add to Quick Style list check box, and then click OK. I could then highlight one of these styles and the entire document would change to that style, allowing me to preview it. However, all of the default Word styles that I had originally, and mentioned above, have vanished! I should still have these styles available to me. Luckily, you can mix and match the colors , fonts , and effects from different themes to create a unique look for your document. If it still doesn't look exactly right, you can customize the theme colors and theme fonts.

When setting theme colors, try to find a part of your document that uses several colors so you get the best idea of what the color scheme looks like. Some themes can add a picture fill to shapes, depending on which shape styles are used. For example, the Paper theme can add a paper-like texture to shapes. Try exploring some of the different shape styles after changing the theme. Once you've found settings you like, you may want to save the theme so you can use it in other documents.

These colour schemes are still part of the current theme. If you select one of those colour schemes and then change your theme, the colour will change with it. If however you select a standard colour that is not part of a theme bottom of the window , this breaks the theme.

If you then change themes, everything will be updated except the colour you changed. To use the colours in this panel you first need to select some text in your document. Another way to change the colours, fonts and effects is jumping to the Page Layout tab and use the buttons for Theme Colours, Theme Fonts or Theme Effects.

When you click the Colours button, for example, you will see a list of all the colour schemes that are used in different themes. Confining your font, colour and effect selections to those from other themes keeps your document theme-intact. This means that if you subsequently change the theme, the colour gets changed too. Changing the theme colours, fonts and effect here changes them for the whole document.

Choose a theme colour. If we just hover the cursor over the different theme thumbnails, we can see that the text we changed will have its colour updated by the new theme. The theme is intact. Now when you change themes, the colour stays the same.
